How the application works

The application for a scholarship from the Club Alpbach Tirol includes several elements. The core of the application is your creative project — it gives us insight into your personality and how you think.

The core: Your creative project

Get creative with the current forum topic “How Europe Wins”. The form is completely free: film, sculpture, graphics, podcast, poem, performance, website – surprise us! The creative project must be created specifically for the application. Important: Seminar papers or essays from your studies are not considered a creative project.

The other elements
  • Motivation: What would you bring to the EFA – and what do you personally hope for from your participation?
  • Inner Fire (Not Rated): What are you passionate about – and why does it matter to you?
  • Initiative: Use a concrete example to describe how you once showed the initiative or took on responsibility.
  • Fireside chat: Name a person with whom you would organize a fireside chat and what you would ask them (it can be critical).
  • Unpopular opinion: Share a pointed, perhaps uncomfortable view of a current social issue.
  • CV: Please no photo, as a PDF (file name: cv_surname_firstname)
  • Tyrol-Connection: Document that proves your ties to Tyrol
  • Statistics: Short required questions to help us evaluate and improve the programme

In our experience, a thoughtful, original creative project matters far more than what is on your CV. We’re not looking for certificates – we’re interested in your ideas, creativity, and commitment. Take time for your application and be authentic – we want to get to know you, not a perfectly polished version of you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Application & Selection Process

No, we look forward to both German and English applications!

After sending, a confirmation will appear on the website and you will receive an automatic email. Please check spam/junk if necessary. If you don’t get a confirmation, please contact us with your name and time of sending info@clubtirol.or.at.

Usually not. If you notice an error immediately after submitting, contact us as soon as possible at info@clubtirol.or.at.

Yes. Please enter this in the form so that we can coordinate with the other clubs for multiple applications. This has no advantage or disadvantage.

Our entire board jointly evaluates each individual application in a multi-day selection process. We decide unanimously and will inform you of the result by the end of April. We pay particular attention to your creative work, your commitment and your motivation.

In order to guarantee unbiasedness, every board member undertakes to declare possible acquaintances or relationships with applicants during the selection process and to abstain.

Definitely! We expressly encourage you to apply again. The number and quality of the applications vary every year, and personal developments can also lead to a different assessment.

Follow the information exactly. In order to remain unbiased, we expressly do not want any photos you are recognizable in the application. We therefore ask you to remove pictures from certificates and CVs if necessary. The texts should not exceed the maximum length.

Yes, all documents submitted will be treated confidentially and only made available to the board for the purpose of awarding the scholarships. Once the procedure has been completed, the data of rejected applicants will be deleted.

Creative Work & Application Content

The creative work is the heart of your application and should deal with the general theme “How Europe Wins” and ideally one of the four tracks. It can be designed in any form – whether visual, written, graphic, plastic or in a completely different way. We like to be surprised! Seminar papers and essays are not considered creative work.

Yes, it must be created specifically for this application. Seminar papers/essays do not count.

For digital creative work, a maximum file size of 25 MB applies. For larger files or physical work, please contact us in advance at info@clubtirol.or.at for alternative submission options.

The creative work should be created by you alone, as it is intended to reflect your personal examination of the topic.

We are interested in two things: (1) which perspectives/experiences/questions you bring into the forum (e.g. from work, training, studies, voluntary work, family, reality of life). (2) What you yourself specificly expect (e.g. which topics you want to deepen, which formats are you interested in, what type of exchange/network you are looking for). It doesn’t have to be a “finished contribution” – also curiosity and good questions count.

The point here is that you can share something personal, which you authentically are passionate about – completely regardless of whether it is political, social, professional or a hobby. We are interested in what really drives you and why. This part will not rated because it shouldn’t be a “performance part”, but should give space to get to know you better as a person.

Describe a situation in which you yourself became active instead of waiting. Important are context, your role, your concrete actions and what has changed as a result (Even small, local or personal situations count). It doesn’t have to be a big project – the decisive factor is that we can understand your share in it.

Fireside chats are a special format at EFA. In a confidential, informal setting, you can talk to interesting speakers and ask them direct questions. These conversations take place under the “Chatham House Rules”, which means that content may be shared, but without naming the person speaking.

You can choose any person (e.g. from politics, science, economy, culture, civil society) – it doesn’t have to be famous. is important why you would choose this person and which one a question you would ask (preferably critical). The question should be formulated in such a way that it opens a real conversation (not just “yes/no”).

A pointed, unconventional view of a current social question that is easy to discuss. It’s not about just saying something provocative, but about a change of perspective or a thesis about which one can argue constructively. Please formulate respectfully and without devaluing groups of people.

Participation Requirements

Our scholarship holders should have a demonstrable connection to Tyrol – be it through birth, current or previous place of residence, school, training, studies or employment in Tyrol. As proof, we accept documents such as birth certificates, school certificates, proof of enrolment, or employment confirmation.

You can apply to clubs of all federal states to which you have a connection! So if you grew up in Tyrol, for example, you are now studying in Vienna or Graz, you can also apply to IG Wien or Club Alpbach Steiermark. Please let us know this in the application form so that we can coordinate with the other clubs for multiple applications.

No, we strictly adhere to the age limits of 18-30 years (cut-off date: 04.09.2026). This requirement is part of our funding guidelines and cannot be circumvented.

Absolutely! We are not looking for experts, but for people with interest and openness to social issues. The Forum Alpbach is a place of learning and exchange – perfect for anyone who wants to broaden their horizons.

No, we expect participation in the entire forum (August 4-4, 2025). Only in justified absolute exceptional cases can we accept deviations. If you know before you apply that you cannot be present the entire time, please communicate this directly in your application.

Yes, even if we think it’s important for the first to get to know and the group dynamics that everyone takes part in the scholarship celebration and the hut weekend, exceptions are possible here, in contrast to the forum itself.

Scholarship

The value of the scholarship is around €3,000. This includes the participation fees for the entire Forum Alpbach and the accommodation in Alpbach for the entire period. Arrival and departure costs and meals are not included in the scholarship.

If there is proven need, we can offer additional financial support in the form of a daily allowance to a limited extent. In this case, please state that you need additional support in your application and briefly justify this.

The scholarship holders are housed together with the board in a guest house in the center of Alpbach, mostly in shared rooms. This promotes exchange and a sense of community during the forum – the apartments become a small home in the middle of the hustle and bustle during this time.

Yes, with the acceptance of the scholarship you will become a member of the Club Alpbach Tirol. The membership fee is €25 per year and allows you to participate in all club events throughout the year.

You cannot again participate as a first-time scholarship holder. However, you can return to the forum as a returner. For more information, see the “Returner Program” section.

The European Forum Alpbach

The European Forum Alpbach (EFA) is an interdisciplinary platform for science, politics, business and culture that has been taking place annually in the Tyrolean mountain village of Alpbach since 1945. Over 4,000 people from all over the world, including around 750 scholarship holders, come together here to discuss current challenges and develop solutions. The EFA 2026 is under the theme of “How Europe Wins” and will take place from August 24th to September 4th, 2026.

The European Forum Alpbach 2026 (August 24th to September 4th) is divided into three program modules:

  • Academy Days: Building Europe’s Intellectual Commons (24–30 August)
In-depth learning and interdisciplinary work in longer-format sessions and studio formats.

  • Euregio Days: Expanding Europe Through Regional Constellations (28–30 August)
A regional perspective on Europe, with cross-border dialogue and cooperation.

  • Conference Days: Converging Perspectives, Creating European Momentum (30 August – 4 September)
Each day centres on one Focus Topic on the Main Stage, complemented by networking formats.

The four tracks are:

  • Climate

  • Finance & Economy

  • Security

  • Democracy and the Rule of Law

In addition, the Focus Topics give further structure to the Conference Days (as a main topic on the Main Stage every day).

Focus Topics are daily main topics Conference Days. In 2026 these include:

  • Capability & Renewal: Mobilising Europe’s Power to Act
  • Finance & Trust: Funding Europe’s New Promise
  • Technology & Society: Developing Europe’s Next Infrastructure
  • Envisioning […] (intentionally open to respond to major developments in 2026)

Under the annual theme How Europe Wins, EFA26 asks, among other things: What does “winning” mean for Europe? Can Europe still win on decisive issues—and if so, alone or with which partners? Does someone have to lose for Europe to win? And what “game” is being played?

No, the program is very extensive and partially overlaps. You can and should put together your individual program. However, we expect that you will be present in Alpbach throughout the period and actively participate. At events that we organize as Club Alpbach Tirol, however, attendance is required.

Most events take place in English. Some discussions and fireplace talks are held in German.

Returner Program

Returners are former scholarship holders who return to the EFA after their first participation. You will receive discounted conditions for tickets and accommodation.

As a returner you have to:

  • Be a member of Club Alpbach Tirol (paid membership fee)
  • be a maximum of 35 years old
  • Write a contribution to the annual report

If there is a high demand, returners who are actively involved in the club or at the EFA are preferred.

The application for returners is made using a separate form and has different deadlines. You will receive the latest information by e-mail if you are a member.

After the application

The decisions will be communicated by e-mail by the end of April 2026.

After the confirmation, you will receive all further information about the scholarship celebration, the hut weekend and organizational details by e-mail. You will also be included in our community and you can already attend events in front of the forum.

The hut weekend (May 30-31, 2026) serves to get to know the scholarship holders among themselves and the board. Here you will also find important information about the forum and you can ask questions. Participation is an important part of the scholarship program.

Due to the high number of applications, we unfortunately cannot give any individual feedback. The rejection does not mean that your application was bad – the number of qualified applicants often exceeds the available scholarship places.
